Frequently Asked Questions
What is a role-playing game (D&D)?
If you've watched Stranger Things, you've seen the most commonly known role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, in action.
Simply put, tabletop role-playing is a form of collaborative storytelling governed by rules that simulate unpredictability and fate.
In role-playing games, players have complete agency to interact with a world that exists in their collective imagination.
The Quest Guide (or Game Master, as it's commonly known) narrates the story, enforces the rules, and works alongside the players to create fantastical locales, intimidating monsters, and breathtaking moments of action and suspense.
We've done everything possible to simplify this format to the bare minimum––just enough rules to keep the game fair and engaging while remaining fast-paced and collaborative at the core.
What does a typical session look like?
We begin the session by establishing safety protocols and game etiquette, teaching the essential rules, and taking a brief workplace strengths assessment which assigns each player their "class". Then, we dive right into the story, creating characters and building the world on the fly!
Afterwards, we discuss what was accomplished, what was learned, and how the in-game events may have inspired interesting ideas for real-life application.
Is this an automated service?
Nope! These are live-facilitated, small group events led by experienced storytellers and team-builders with deep knowledge of the QuestWorks methodology.
Is QuestWorks only for creative teams?
QuestWorks is for all kinds of teams—we just market it to creative teams because we know creatives are starved for team building that's designed for their sensibilities.
We know that most teams are tired of standard team building offers—especially the impersonal and stale remote options.
Teams of all kinds can reap the benefits of our unique approach, so don't hesitate to reach out.
We've adventured with teams in tech, gaming, startups, and even law firms!
Why sign up for an Ongoing Campaign?
Siloed, one-time team-building events are proven to be less effective than regular, recurring events––especially if there is an element of continuity and depth.
Ongoing Campaigns become embedded in your company culture—it's a great way to attract like-minded talent, on-board them to the team dynamic, and keep them around long-term.
Plus, it often takes several sessions for team members to truly warm up, become fully authentic with one another, and start forming meaningful bonds through experiences of humor, emotion, and excitement.
Why not just have my team play video games together?
Role-playing is entirely different from video games (and far more effective for team-building) for several reasons:
- Because role-playing games are so visceral and immersive, the memories made and stories told (especially with a collective such as a team or group of friends) are almost impossible to forget. Like a vivid, incredible dream that sticks around long after you wake up... but all of your coworkers remember it, too!
- Role-playing games offer players complete agency––meaning that their personal values, viewpoints, and loyalties will be tested.
- In role-playing, your team members will be interacting directly with each other.
People learn best through stories––and their ability to internalize their learning is directly related to their involvement in the story. Role-playing games maximize this opportunity.
How do you handle large teams?
We find that adventuring parties excel in groups of 5 or less. Luckily, we have a roster of talented, engaging, and thoroughly trained Quest Guides to lead your teams. We can divide groups of up to ~200+ players into 5-person parties, playing simultaneously or at different times.
Do you do in-person events?
Yes, but only for companies in the Denver, CO metro area. We are working toward organizing company retreats—keep an eye out!
What materials do we need to play?
None at all. The game takes place in the Theater of the Mind––and we use a platform called Role (playrole.com) to facilitate a high-quality video call with access to character sheets, dice, and other resources.
Just show up with an open mind and a positive attitude!
I'm worried that my team will think this is "too nerdy" or hard to learn.
Role-playing has grown exponentially in popularity in recent years, especially among creatives and technical workers, while shaking off some undeserved stigma. These games are for EVERYONE––our system is intentionally designed to be instantly accessible to any layperson.
We run a deeply simplified and refined version of D&D tailored for team-building. The game, both in action and out of it, moves fast with minimal dice-rolling and focuses heavily on storytelling, relationship-building, and decision-making.
